Why Tomorrow Kicks Off Our Farmers Market Season

For three years, opening day at Wicker Park Farmers Market has marked the unofficial start of our family's favorite season. There's something about that first Sunday—the perfect blend of cool spring mornings, emerging local vendors, and the unbridled energy of a community reconnecting over fresh food.

Wicker Park is more than just a farmers market location in Chicago; it's a neighborhood anchor. The park itself, anchored by its iconic fountain and surrounded by mature trees, creates this perfect village-like atmosphere. The vendors know their customers by name. Families make it a weekend ritual. Kids run through the grass while parents load their market haul into wicker baskets (yes, really).

By mid-afternoon, we're heading home with peak-season produce, fresh flowers still dripping with morning dew, and enough energy spent that an afternoon nap feels like a luxury rather than a necessity. That's the Wicker Park farmers market effect.

What to Expect at Opening Day

Fresh Seasonal Produce

Spring is peak season for early greens, asparagus, mushrooms, and fresh herbs. Expect vendors like Chanticlare Farm, Iron Creek Organic Farm, Jacobson Farms, and more with the first real harvests of the season. These aren't imported—these are Chicago-area farms with soil still on their boots.

  • Chanticlare Farm
  • Hillside Orchards
  • Iron Creek Organic
  • Jacobson Farms
  • Khangs Family Farm
  • Wild Coyote

Flowers That Stop You in Your Tracks

Don't sleep on the flower vendors. Fresh-cut dahlias, zinnias, and seasonal blooms at a fraction of florist prices. Literally the last thing you'll buy before leaving, and somehow always the best decision of the morning.

Ready-to-Eat Food & Beverages

Vendors like Libby's Corner, MJC Crepes, Rainbow Thai, Roma Kitchen, and more serve fresh food while you shop. Perfect for breakfast or a mid-market pick-me-up. Also expect artisan coffee from Kikwetu Coffee, Anticonquista Cafe, and others.

Community & SNAP/LINK Benefits

Wicker Park accepts SNAP/LINK, and the market matches your benefits dollar-for-dollar. It's a neighborhood that takes food access seriously. Expect a welcoming, multigenerational crowd united by a love of local food.

Beyond the Market: Wicker Park & Bucktown Attractions

If you've got energy left after the market (spoiler: we usually don't), Wicker Park and Bucktown overflow with things to do. The neighborhood has transformed into one of Chicago's most vibrant communities, with indie shops, restaurants, galleries, and green spaces.

Wicker Park Itself

The park is stunning, especially in May. Beyond the iconic fountain, there's open green space perfect for post-market lounging, picnicking, or letting kids burn off energy while you collapse with your fresh flowers.

Nearby Restaurants & Cafes

Bucktown has become a food destination. Pair your farmers market haul with lunch at one of dozens of independent restaurants within walking distance. The coffee culture alone is worth exploring.

Milwaukee Avenue Shopping

Vintage shops, bookstores, artisan galleries, and boutiques line Milwaukee Avenue. Perfect for a slow Sunday morning after the market winds down.

Arts & Culture

From murals to gallery openings, Bucktown is an arts hotspot. Check out ongoing community events and exhibitions happening throughout the neighborhood.

Honest assessment: most Sundays, we make it to the park bench for about 20 minutes before heading home with our market haul for an afternoon nap. And that's perfectly fine. Farmers market season in Chicago has a way of wearing you out in the best possible way.
